Jessup simulates the proceedings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), featuring a setup where three justices preside over the bench. Once all three judges are present, the participants must stand to show respect. The overall atmosphere of the Jessup competition is tense and serious. During the oral debate segment, two members from each side represent their country's stance and engage in legal arguments. Judges can interrupt at any time to ask questions about legal issues of interest, thereby testing the participants' psychological resilience.
Over the past decade, Jessup case topics have not only covered traditional international law theories such as state responsibility, state succession, self-determination, territorial disputes, state sovereignty, human rights, and diplomatic privileges and immunities, but have also gradually encompassed branches of international law including international criminal law, international environmental law, human rights and humanitarian law, and international investment law.
Why Choose Jessup?
Strengthen Foundation, Improve Skills
During the competition, participants need to read numerous international law English monographs and a vast number of English cases and documents. They must deeply understand and flexibly apply relevant international law rules and theories, thereby building a logical framework for brief writing and oral debate. The intense training significantly enhances participants' academic thinking abilities, legal research skills, and legal English proficiency.
Broaden Horizons, Enhance Perspective
As a top-tier international moot court competition, participating in Jessup means competing alongside outstanding law students from across the nation and the world. During the competition, participants learn from each other, complement each other's strengths, and progress together. Exceptional performance in the competition can earn more recognition and increase the chances of receiving higher-level internship or academic offers from law firms.
